The backup and restore process is performed through the LAN connector on all Samsung SVMi Voicemail systems except for the SVMi4, SVMi4e, SVMi2e, and SVM400. The SVMi8, SVMi8e, SVMi16e, and SVMi20e are all equipped with a LAN connector. You can perform a backup to a PC hooked directly to this connector using a crossover cable or to a PC on the local area network.

To start the backup and restore process, log into the SVMi using a terminal emulator program such as Microsoft Hyperterminal and access the menu option titled "Operating Utilities". Then select the option titled "Backup and Restore". This option simply shuts down the SVMi system and automatically engages the built in FTP server software. The SVMi application must be shut down in order to run the FTP server software, which means the voicemail system will not process calls while the backup is being performed.

There is a separate backup and restore utility program called SVMBackup that must be loaded on the PC that is performing the backup. SVMBackup can be downloaded from the Telephone Warehouse website under the DOWNLOADS option, in the UTILITIES category. You can also use FTP to simply copy the files you want to backup onto a drive on the network. To use FTP, you must have your own FTP client software. If you choose to use your own FTP client, you must manually select the files on the SVMi that are backed up. These files are:
\dta\*.tbl
\mbx\*.*
\msg\*.*
\pmt\*.*

If you use the SVMBackup application, it provides a menu-driven interface and allows you to select which files you wish to backup. Launch SVMBackup, connect to the SVMi system, and select the files you wish to back up and begin the backup process.

After completing your backup using either the SVMBackup utility or your own FTP client, you must restart the voicemail system to return it to normal operation. Do this by either pressing the reset button on the SVMi card, or OfficeServ manager and accessing MMC 740.
